It's interesting the things new acquaintances say when they find out you are a Christian and better yet when they discover your husband is a Pastor. I recently met someone who volunteered that he didn't go to church because it actually made him feel weak and faint, like the sight of blood. He assured me he knows all about the Bible though because he read it cover to cover, like a novel, decades ago when he was 13.
Back when I didn't know the Lord I tried this approach and I didn't read very long. I found it boring and tedious and I didn't understand what I was reading. Now I know why. The Bible is not like an ordinary book that you read once and then you're done. It is ALIVE! As you come to know the Lord and seek Him He opens your eyes and makes the words practically jump off the page.
Right now I am spending time in the Old Testament book Jeremiah. I just read these words, God speaking to us first person: " Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength, or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this...."
Are you ready?.....
" but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who excercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight".
Did you know that God wants you to know Him? To understand Him? He isn't trying to hide or make it hard. All you have to do is ask Him and He'll show you. Crack open that Bible and take a look with new eyes. Just try a little each day. You will find He will speak to you and show you things about your situation.
In the meantime I am so thankful for the Lord's kindness in opening my eyes to see and my ears to hear. I can't imagine going through this life without Him, who makes a way where there seems to be no way.
I am also thankful that God is just and loves and delights in justice. He is the truth and he will reveal the truth in all things. I hope this post has inspired you to get to know the Lord. A good place to start is by reading the gospel of John. Take it slow. Don't rush, and ask Him to show you great and mighty things you do not know. Ask Him to show you the truth. Perhaps you'll find the things you have trusted in or thought all your life are not really true at all...
I was saved last year. Besides my two boys, it's the best thing that ever happened to me. I just finished a great week at church working with the kids at VBS. I am so grateful!
